Id, Ego, and Superego

drawing_idegosuperegoI chose to use phone batteries to illustrate the strengths of id, ego, and superego relative to each other because I think I have the worst self-control when it comes to using my phone.

The most common times there is tension between these 3 structures of personality is whenever I have homework that I have to do but don’t want to. Homeworks such as papers and projects especially if I find the task to be tedious.

Personally, I think Ego has the greatest control over all 3 because of how powerful my id is as well as the demands of my family. Although I myself don’t have a powerful superego, my parents and family ensure that academic demands are met so I can excel in school. I think to better balance these structures, I need to align my desires to what needs to be done. Or, I could find a way that relates my desire to the goal that needs to be accomplished. For example, if there was a paper I really dread doing, I would simply have to think that “I have to get high in this paper so I can get high grades in this subject. I can use my phone after I’ve done everything I need to do”.

Basic Emotions

Diagram of Basic Emotions

Slide1

In this first diagram for the ABCs of sadness, I put the antecedent events such as losing a loved one, loneliness, and watching a sad movie because I think those are examples of when people feel the most sadness. Some of the beliefs which I believe also cause sadness included not feeling loved. All these can cause a weight or heaviness in the chest, crying or wanting to cry, and not wanting to talk to anyone. Based on experience this is how I usually see people expressing their sadness.

Slide2

On this other diagram, I used the basic emotion of joy. As seen in the diagram, the ABCs are practically the opposite of each other. Instead of feeling a heaviness in the chest, there is a lightness someone feels when they feel joy.

My Hybrid Identities

hybrid identities 2

Growing up, I was always surrounded by various cultures due to social media which allowed these different cultures to be more accessible to me. I grew up watching Filipino, American, and Japanese (anime) shows. American culture was the most accessible to me because my cousins, who moved to America, adopted the American culture and shared that culture with me whenever they visited us. I saw how much of this culture I adopted when we visited them in America. It was not hard for us to communicate with the Americans because we shared some similarities with our culture.

At the end of Junior High School, my parents and I decided that I should move to Ateneo Senior High School from Poveda. Since I studied in Poveda since Kindergarten, I was already very rooted in Povedan culture. But to be able to survive Ateneo Senior High School, I had to adapt to the new culture. This led me to develop a hybrid identity consisting of Ateneo and Poveda.

Pros and Cons

These various hybrid identities can have both positive and negative effects. Some of these negative effects include the dominance of one identity, and confusion.  One example of this is the dominance of certain American cultures. For example, I find myself speaking English more often than Filipino. These hybrid identities also lead to confusion because I end up not knowing which identity to prioritize.

Although there are negative effects, some of the positive effects include adaptability. Having hybrid identities allow me to be exposed to more cultures. These cultures help me learn to react to more kinds of environments, making me more adaptable.

Loob at Labas

Some of the characteristics I consider as part of my ‘loob’ is mostly seen in my Filipino characteristics. Throughout my childhood, these are the qualities I always remember but never really understood why I have them. For example, going to Church every Sunday, which I later found out was not that normal.

I consider my ‘labas’ characteristics I’ve developed over the years because of social media and the internet. Some examples of these are English internet slang.

My Bronfenbrenner Diagram

I placed my parents and sister in the microsystem because they were always there growing up and I based my activities on them. I put the interaction between my parents and my sister in the mesosystem because the way they interact with each other affects me as well. I chose to put my parent’s workplace and my sister’s school in the exosystem because they affect the things my parents and sister talk about, they also affect how my parents and sister act. I placed my family in the macrosystem because they affect the values and culture I adhere to. Lastly, I placed neighbors and schoolmates in the chronosystem because I am always surrounded by them, but they are constantly changing.
